I sometimes like to declare to my automotive oriented friends, that in my not-so-humble-opinion, the greatest filmed sequence of racing, is the opening 25 minutes of Steve McQueen’s Le Mans feature film. By the same token, I think the greatest racing documentary film of all time, is the 1993 BBC tv series, “A Season with McLaren”. It’s an exclusive behind the scenes look at the inner workings of the team’s 1993 season, which was also by chance the last year that Senna drove for them.
The tv series was broadcast in seven parts, each focused on different aspect of the McLaren F1 operation and it seems like the film crew had complete and total access to the team and more importantly its drivers. It’s a little eerie watching the sequences of Senna, knowing that his life was going to end the following year, but the documentary does give you some insight into the great man’s character and depth.

For those of you who don’t already have copies of this documentary, it’s likely impossible to source DVDs, but thankfully it’s up on youtube. So if you are intrigued by this episode you can search and find the others.
