What makes an overtake memorable? Is it about being opportunistic or calculative? Or is it simply about putting everything on the line? Everyone has their own definitions of what constitutes an epic overtake, but I'm sure one move most people will remember was Rubens Barrichello vs Michael Schumacher in the Hungarian Grand Prix. The dusty, twisty Hungaroring circuit is notorious for being difficult to overtake, but the history between these two drivers is what makes this moment so special.
Rubens, who was famously ordered to relinquish the lead of the 2002 Austrian GP to his then Ferrari team-mate Michael Schumacher, finally had a chance to get revenge. As we've mentioned previously, Michael Schumacher is a very hard racer, but no one could have guessed what was about to happen. Darting out of the slipstream, Rubens went to pass on the main straight but was pushed all the way to the pit wall. It was a true heart-in-your-mouth moment as only millimetres separated Barrichello's Williams from having a monumental accident. Listen carefully to the onboard and you'll hear that Rubens doesn't lift off the throttle.
Rubens was obviously incensed (listen his radio comms here), and afterwards Michael issued an apology for the incident.
