The New York International Auto Show has just kicked off in the Big Apple, and among the big storylines from this year’s show is the announcement of very special Ford Mustang. Half a century ago the Mustang made its debut at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, and to mark that milestone Ford has not only placed a new Mustang convertible atop the Empire State Building, but it’s just unveiled a 50th anniversary edition of the 2015 car.

While we already know a lot about the new 2015 Mustang, it’s not surprising that Ford is taking the birthday celebration to another level. Based on the GT model with the Track Pack option, the 50th Anniversary Edition is sure to be an instant hit among collectors thanks to limited production numbers and some cool retro touches.

The car will come with essentially every option available on the new Mustang, with buyers’ only choice being either a six speed manual or automatic transmission. There will be just two exterior finishes available: Kona Blue, and Wimbledon White – the color of the first-ever Mustang sold back in 1964.

Along with special badging and identification, the anniversary model will include some special exterior touches like chrome-trimmed tailights and louvered rear quarter windows.

Perhaps most prominent is a unique front grille which pays homage to the original 1964.5 model.

The interior also gets some loving with a unique aluminum-trimmed dash panel, special seat upholstery and cashmere stitching throughout.

Production will be limited to just 1,964 examples – just like the 50th anniversary Porsche 911 that we recently drove. Given the huge following that the Mustang has built over the decades, I think these should sell out pretty quick.

Happy birthday, Mustang. Here’s to another half-century of fun.
