The prospects of a next-gen RX-7 has been the subject of so many rumours since production of the iconic Mazda model ceased in 2002, that you have to take every new ‘report’ with a grain of salt. But if there was ever a time to get properly excited about a future Mazda sports car, it’s on the back of the Japanese automaker’s announcement of a new concept to be shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in 30 days time.

What do we know for sure? Well, apart from the teaser image above, not a whole lot. But this excerpt from Mazda’s press release does sound promising: “The design of the sports car concept to be unveiled in Tokyo is modern but maintains a sense of lineage and authenticity, appearing almost to condense Mazda’s entire history of sports car development into a single model.”

There’s no mention of what engine might power the concept, but with Mazda confirming that a classic rotary Cosmo Sport 110S – a model than turns 50 in 2017 by the way – will be on display, it’s hard not to get just a little bit excited…
