I vividly remember the very first time I heard a V8 engine. Or at least, the first time I realized that what I was hearing was indeed a V8.
It was a wet and cold winter day in Oxford, I couldn’t have been more than nine years old, and as I was walking down the high street that led to the center of town with my parents, a Ford Capri spun its rear wheels brutally away from the lights. That moment left a lasting impression. The roar of a big engine, the excitement of seeing wheels spinning – you know how kids think!
But while the 5.0L V8 version of the Capri was a nice ride, my personal favorite from the ’80s was a car I saw almost every day on the roads – the Rover SD1. Most of them weren’t the eight-cylinder version with the 3.5L Rover V8 engine, but I recall my joy when I actually came across one with the big motor.
All these memories came rushing back when I saw this amazing 4K film from Adam Tait captured at the recent Goodwood 75th Members’ Meeting. With a focus on JD Classics‘ ex-Patrick Motor Sport SD1, there’s plenty action from the Gerry Marshall Trophy race, coupled with snippets of old racing footage to tie it all together. It’s pure goodness and I just wanted to share. Hit play above and enjoy!
